Tax Levy

In case you haven't heard.....
PROTECT THE SCHUYLER R-I SCHOOLS
Vote Yes on Proposition C on April 7
Important Facts to Consider:
The Schuyler R-I School District faces a $300,000 deficit
The tax levy has not been increased since 1995 and costs have risen
Our tax levy is $0.9883 lower than the average for schools in our area
Funds from the bond issue passed in November may not be used for day-to-day operating expenses like salaries, transportation, utilities, books and supplies
If the tax levy fails, cuts will have to made to programs and staff
THE CHALLENGES WE FACE AS A COMMUNITY
Higher Day-to-Day Costs:Just as the costs to run our homes and our businesses have risen, so have the costs to educate our children.
The costs for day-to-day operations of the District (paying teachers, purchasing materials, funding programs, utility costs, and transportation) have risen over the years.
The Current Tax Levy:The tax levy of the district has not been increased since 1995.
As a result of not increasing the current tax levy in 14 years and rising costs, the district faces a deficit of approximately $300,000 in the annual operating budget.
These issues are not the result of mismanagement or lack of attention by the administration or school board.
They are simply the result of declining enrollment, budget restraints, and operating cost increases.
If we do not correct the situation now, it will be necessary to cut the operating expenses of the District, including staff and programs.
The Proposed Operating Tax Levy Increase:The April 7 ballot will include the Proposition C sales tax rollback.
The passage of Proposition C will result in a tax increase that will provide funding to our schools.
This tax is necessary to maintain the daily operations of our schools at their current level of staff and programs.
The District is requesting a $0.6398 increase in the current operating tax level of $2.75 to $3.3898 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.
If this is not approved by the voters, educational programs must be cut to meet the budget limitations.
What About the Bond Issue That Was Passed in November?
The money from the bond issue passed in November can only be used for capital expenditures like major maintenance, repair, and certain technology costs.
It cannot be used for day-to-day operating expenses like salaries, transportation, utilities, and supplies.
The ability for our children to receive the education they deserve and need to compete in today’s world is at risk. The Schuyler County R-I School District has been an outstanding learning environment for our children. It is up to us to ensure that this level of excellence continues.
Vote YES on April 7 for Our Children’s Future!
